MALÉ, 27 October 2026 — The Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission (MMBC) has extended the deadline for media outlets to re-register and update their records.

According to the announcement issued by the Commission today, the final date for completing the re-registration and updating of records is 28 January 2027 at 23:59.

Under the new regulations formulated under the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Act, all newspapers and magazines that were previously registered were required to update their records within a six-month period. That period was due to expire today, 27 October 2026. However, the Commission has today decided to extend the deadline.

Under the new regulations, all newspapers and magazines must register and update their records. Newly issued registrations are valid for five years. Applications for re-registration must be submitted at least 90 days before the expiry of the existing registration.

Previously, the registration of newspapers and magazines was handled by the Ministry of Youth. Before that, it was managed by the Home Ministry. Following the establishment of the MMBC under the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Act, this responsibility has been transferred to the Commission. It is noted that a significant fee is now being charged for a service that previously involved no additional fee. In connection with this, individuals interested in journalism and writing have expressed concern.
