On Friday, August 28, 2026 (15 Rabi' al-Awwal 1448 AH), a sermon delivered across mosques in the Maldives emphasized that reforming society and addressing various social and moral challenges is a shared individual and collective responsibility.
The sermon, titled "Reforming Society, Everyone's Responsibility," underscored that the Maldivian community, historically built on Islamic principles of brotherhood and peace, has recently experienced undesirable social and moral changes that demand deep reflection and concerted effort from all.
One of the most detrimental issues highlighted was disobedience to parents and neglecting them in their old age. The sermon reminded congregants that kindness to parents is a divine commandment, a pathway to blessings and paradise, and a crucial safeguard against calamities. It expressed profound sadness over the practice of abandoning elderly parents in hospitals and special care facilities.
The sermon also addressed the growing disrespect for mosques. It noted that engaging in gossip, backbiting, arguing, and defaming others near mosque gates after prayers diminishes the spiritual benefits and rewards of worship. Muslims, it stressed, should foster bonds of brotherhood free from envy, anger, and oppression.
Furthermore, the sermon reiterated that honesty in business and economic dealings is an act of worship, warning that deception and non-payment of Zakat lead to a loss of blessings. It criticized keeping businesses open for material gain during calls to prayer, acquiring wealth through illicit means, and neglecting children during prayer times. The sermon also called for collective action to stop social issues such as dressing in ways that undermine Islamic dignity and promoting immodest advertisements.
Beyond societal reform, the sermon emphasized compassion for those in need as a vital aspect of faith. It highlighted visiting orphans in children's homes and infants lacking parental care, noting that bringing joy to these children is a means to achieve the great rewards of paradise. Providing assistance and care to children requiring blood transfusions and facing significant living expenses was also recognized as a noble service to humanity.
Concluding its message, the sermon urged individuals to move beyond merely discussing societal problems and instead assume personal responsibility for resolving them. It affirmed that true peace and prosperity in society can only be attained through gratitude for God's blessings and by living in accordance with His righteous path.
